The reformer machine was invented by Joseph Pilates, the founder of Pilates, in the early 1900s. Joseph Pilates was interned as an “enemy alien” during World War I in England. While there, he wanted to help bed ridden patients with rehabilitation training. He rigged springs to hospital beds, enabling patients to use the springs’ resistance to work on gaining muscle strength without leaving the beds. The Pilates reformer machine we know today is modeled after these hospital beds.

There are about 21,843 suppliers who manufacture and sell Pilates equipment, mainly in Asia. The top three suppliers are from United States, China mainland, and China Taiwan, from which the percentage of Pilates equipment supply is 1%, 99%, and 1% respectively. Pilates equipment products are most popular in United States, United Kingdom, and Australia.

Pilates equipment, as an imported product, has become increasingly mature in the development process of Pilates. Many manufacturers are only satisfied with the manufacturing of existing products, but few are willing to improve.

There are two types of Pilates Equipment on the market. One is the Classic Style Wooden Pilates bed. The other one is Metallic Pilates bed from the Modern Style, of which the INIKO belongs.
